August 12th is being celebrated as
National Librarians’ Day in India, in remembrance of birthday of national
professor of library science, Padmashree Dr. S. R. Ranganathan (1892-1972), who
had spearheaded library development in India.

GLIMPSES
BIOGRAPHY:-Dr. S.R. Ranganatan (1892 1972)
๐Birth:- Shiyali in Tanjavoor (Tamilnadu) on 09th August,1892.
๐Family Status:- Married in 1907 with Rukmini. but she died in an accident
on 13 November 1928. Ranganathan married again in 1929 to Sarada in December
1929. Ranganathan was blessed with only one son, Shri R. Yogeswar, born in
1932.
๐Education:-Ranganathan attended the S.M. Hindu High School at Shiyali and
passed Matriculation examination in 1908/1909. Ranganathan passed the
examination in First Class. Ranganathan passed B.A. with a first class in
March/April 1913. In June. Ranganathan passed M.A. in 1916 and he wanted to be
a teacher in Mathematics.
๐Profession:-Appointed as a subordinate education service and worked as
Assistant Lecture in Govt. College (Mangalore & Coimbatore),
1917. Between 1917 and 1921. In July 1921, joined the Presidency College,
Madras as Assistant Professor of Mathematics. The first Librarian of
Madras University-January, 1924.
